Orange Von Rio Tetra

$4.99

The Orange Von Rio Tetra, scientifically known as Hyphessobrycon flammeus, is a vibrant, active freshwater tetra native to southeastern Brazil, particularly in the coastal drainages around Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. This species is often referred to as the Flame Tetra due to its fiery red-orange coloration. In the aquarium hobby, selectively bred strains have enhanced the orange and red tones, making the “Orange Von Rio” a standout variety.

Adults typically reach about 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) in length. They have a laterally compressed body with a deep orange to bright red hue covering most of the body, sometimes fading toward a silvery belly. The dorsal and anal fins are generally edged in black, adding a sharp contrast to the otherwise warm coloration. Males tend to be slimmer and more vividly colored than females, especially during courtship or display.

In the aquarium, Hyphessobrycon flammeus is undemanding and well-suited for community tanks. A group of at least 6 individuals should be kept together, as they are schooling fish that feel most secure and display their best coloration when surrounded by their own kind. A tank of at least 15 to 20 gallons is recommended, with soft lighting, live or artificial plants, and open swimming space.

Water parameters should be kept within a temperature range of 72 to 80°F (22 to 27°C), with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. They are relatively adaptable but thrive in soft, slightly acidic to neutral water. Good filtration and regular water changes will support their health and coloration.

Orange Von Rio Tetras are omnivores and accept a wide range of foods. A high-quality flake or micro pellet can form the staple of their diet, supplemented with frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms to enhance color and vitality. They also benefit from occasional vegetable matter or spirulina-based foods.

Peaceful and energetic, they are excellent community fish, compatible with other small tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, peaceful dwarf cichlids, and livebearers. Their small size and gentle nature make them unsuitable tankmates for large or aggressive fish.

Breeding Hyphessobrycon flammeus is relatively straightforward. They are egg scatterers that spawn among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. A separate breeding tank with soft, acidic water and dim lighting helps encourage spawning. Adults should be removed post-spawning to prevent them from eating the eggs. Fry hatch in 24–36 hours and can be fed infusoria or powdered fry food until they are large enough for baby brine shrimp.

Overall, the Orange Von Rio Tetra (Hyphessobrycon flammeus) is a hardy, colorful, and easy-to-care-for species that adds constant motion and warm color to community aquariums. Its social nature and peaceful temperament make it a favorite among both beginner and experienced aquarists.
